Ensembles

ENSEMBLES All campers will audition on Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the general welcome meeting. The audition will consist of campers playing a classical piece of music of their choosing that showcases their musical ability. Local / State Honor Band auditions make great audition material. There may also be a scale or chromatic scale requested and finally sight-reading. Campers wishing to audition for jazz band need only to bring that instrument into their audition and sightread the jazz band sight-reading excerpt for placement in one of the groups. SYMPHONIC BAND This group is typically comprised of older (High School). If a younger camper shows great maturity both socially and musically, the opportunity to play in the Symphonic Band is possible. CONCERT BAND This group is typically comprised of younger (Middle School). We have had some instances of students in the 9th grade being ask to play in this band due to various reasons. We feel that whatever large ensemble you play in, you will be challenged musically and have an amazing experience. JAZZ BAND A / B These groups meet in the morning (B&C 9:15-9:30am) or afternoon (A 1:35-3:05pm). Placement in the jazz bands are based on your Sunday audition and function from introductions in jazz up to advanced material in the A jazz band. All campers with very few exceptions interested in jazz band will be able to participate in one of the groups. Typically B Band is comprised of Middle school campers with little or no jazz experience and is a great way to get your ‘feet wet’ in the genre. The B band is comprised of middle school and some high school campers with a basic understanding of jazz and possibly a little bit of experience improvising. The A band is comprised of high school campers with a better understanding of jazz and typically competent at improvising. All campers are encouraged to audition for one of the jazz ensembles on Sunday afternoon. SMALL GROUPS In preparation for Thursday night’s Student Recital, campers will break off into various sized ensembles to explore chamber music repertoire starting Monday morning. These ensembles range in size from solo pieces, up to large ensembles of 10 or more. Some of these groups will be conducted by coaches or students Thursday night, many of them will not. Our hope is to open up campers to the world of chamber music. If you have a piece for a group of people that you have always wanted to play, bring it.
